Bowen, Rhys - Evans Above,
Paperback: 212 pages (Apr. 1999) Publisher: Allison & Busby ISBN: 0749004061

Evans Above is the first in a series set in Snowdonia. The author lives and was first published in America hence this edition is full of Americanisms and American spelling as well as a number of typos.

Evan Evans or Evans-the-Law is the village policeman for Llanfair, a village in the foothills of Mt. Snowdon. Two hikers fall to their deaths in separate incidents leading Evans to suspect foul play. His superior is not at first convinced and is reluctant to divert attention from his manhunt for a child killer in the nearby town. Evans investigates and finds not only a connection between the two men but a link to an incident 6 years ago where a man died in an army training exercise.

I don't think it would be a 'spoiler' to say that everything gets wrapped up satisfactorily. The tale is told well though the characters other than Evans are often little more than caricatures and you may feel tired after all that running up and down Snowdon. Oh and the inhabitants of that part of Wales don't like the English much. An enjoyable read and a good book for fans of M C Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series.
